Question
Is this a left turn only lane? It looks like, but I can't be sure. That would make sense, otherwise you'd have 2 lanes merging into one as they proceed east on 18th St.
replies
Suggestion
It is likely already the case that due to the parking garages in the vicinity of this street, a large portion of the vehicular traffic at any given time is in search of parking spots. We ought not indulge the unending search for the perfect parking spot when there are numerous only short drives away. These parking spots should be pick-up/drop-off only if they are to be part of the design. There is a metro station quite close, inducing wary drivers searching for parking to turn onto this road is a mistake.
replies
Suggestion
There truly is no reason to do half measures like curbs and flex posts. Ultimately, a vehicle only has to be determined and unashamed to overcome these protections. We ought to be protected against unashamed drivers by jersey barriers, large potted plants, etc.
replies
Suggestion
The city should consider hardening this portion of the centerline. This would completely eliminate the threat of a vehicle attempting to cut across the street.
replies
Suggestion
Considering the extremely high number of conflict points created by this driveway configuration, a raised crosswalk would be advisable. Vehicles and drivers should both see a smaller visual field to discourage speeding and keep them focused on what is ahead of them rather than looking at vehicles in preparation for their turn. This would also introduce a tactile confirmation that they have exited the vehicle-dominated realm of the parking garage and entered the shared realm of the street.
replies
Suggestion
Need more protection for bikes turning onto Crystal Drive. Bike lanes must end subtlety and with care.
replies
Suggestion
Please add actual curbs here instead of flexiposts to ensure bike lane users are protected and that cars don't stop here and block the bike lane.

on all 4 sides would be GREAT!

Suggestion
Having PUDO parking at this location - by the Metro entrance - is critical, so hyou might need to delete the trees in this location to provide sufficient critical space for bike-peds. Please add more trees and greenery elsewhere on this general site.

Suggestion
Agreed - both the clear zone sidewalk width and the bike lane width need to be wider - to 6' minimum clear zone and 6' minium bike lane width. Wider would be even better. This is a very busy intersection for bike-peds and will get even busier when the new Metro entrance opens.
replies
Suggestion
Possible to have a raised crosswalk, I imagine this will be heavily used by pedestrians.
replies
Suggestion
Can you consider a raised crosswalk?
replies
Suggestion
Can you consider a raised crosswalk? They are extremely effective, e.g., at courthouse gov building at the parking lot on clarendon blvd.
replies
Suggestion
Possible to sharpen the curve here otherwise we have cars coming in from a fast road turning fast onto 18th
replies
Suggestion
Any opportunity to reduce this entrance size from 4 lanes to 2 to increase pedestrian and bike safety?
replies
Suggestion
Can you widen this right up to the line to reduce crossing distances?
replies
Suggestion
Can you ensure that this is some form of hard bollard, ideally concrete to create a more protected intersection and slow down turning speeds
replies
Suggestion
Widen the right side of concrete here to create an island reducing crossing distances and better protecting the bike lane at the intersection
replies
Suggestion
Can you add a concrete island here to create a safer protected intersection? There is enough space for cars to turn onto Crystal.
replies
Suggestion
Can we add a hard bollard here to slow down turns onto 18th to make sure there isn't a bad interaction from both bikes and cars turning but also cars going into the turn lane and those turning onto 18
replies
Suggestion
It is possible to sharpen the curve of this concrete barrier here to slow down cars turning right from 18th? This is a pretty smooth curve which will lead to fast turns by cars and bikes will be hidden by the cars parked as they move west creating dangerous interactions. The extra ~1s from a slowed down turn will enable drivers to see bikes coming down the lane.
replies
Suggestion
Can we extend the concrete to slow down drivers turning in?
replies
Suggestion
Can we extend the median to the south part of this intersection to slow down cars turning in and out (but not affecting those travelling straight on 18?
replies
Suggestion
Please add an island here as this will decrease crossing distances by up to 17 feet which is a substantial quality of life and safety improvement. Plus it creates a protected intersection for bikes which we really need. It often feels like the area is constantly just crossing really wide roads and this minor adjustment will make a big difference. There is more than ample space for cars to turn from crystal to 18th especially with the staggered positioning of those going east at the light on 18th.
replies
Suggestion
Seems to be too thin of a bike lane for in front of what will become a busy metro station entrance. Could we remove the street parking and widen the bike lanes on both sides? This area has a lot of parking already and there are a number of public provided street parking spots in this design
replies
Suggestion
Can you consider extending the concrete barrier up to the crosswalk. Otherwise it will be used to park cars and block the bike lane. It also helps to create an island to reduce crossing distances substantially and reduce car speeds as the road design meets the speed expectation for drivers.
replies
Suggestion
Can you add an island here, this reduces the crossing distances by up to 17 feet which is a substantial reduction for those walking and also protects the intersection for bikes. There is sufficient space for even larger vehicles to turn.
replies
Left turning vehicles are a key threat to people biking and walking across driveways. Limiting them into some or all of this garage will improve safety for the many people walking and biking, all in exchange for a minor inconvenience for a small number of drivers.
replies
This lane should be a signalized right turn to separate the many more pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the street from turning vehicles.
replies
I hope this right turn is signalized to protect people walking and biking from turning vehicles
replies
Please consider a protected intersection (akin to 15th/S.Eads. This will be a busy intersection with lots of pedestrians and PUDO vehicles. It will be important to reduce conflicts among different transportation modes

Suggestion
The current design lacks essential amenities, including benches for seating, lighting for nighttime visibility and safety, and waste receptacles to maintain cleanliness. Adding these elements would enhance comfort, safety, and cleanliness, aligning with the Public Spaces Master Plan’s goals for a welcoming and well-maintained streetscape. These amenities are critical for creating a more accessible, enjoyable environment for all users.
replies
Suggestion
To ensure healthy tree growth in this urban setting, trees must be planted with adequate soil depth and volume, in protected planting beds with decorative railings or raised barriers. This will prevent soil compaction from foot traffic, reduce the risk of damage from dogs, and deter excessive exposure to pet waste/urination. In Northern Virginia’s urban environment, these measures are essential for trees to survive to maturity, provide long-lasting shade, and enhance the pedestrian experience as outlined in the Public Spaces Master Plan.
replies
Suggestion
Crosswalks should be designed to provide high visibility and prioritize pedestrian right-of-way, essential for aligning with Vision Zero’s safety goals. Implementing raised crosswalks, enhanced lighting, and textured pavement could greatly improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, especially during peak hours.
replies
Suggestion
The sidewalk width is insufficient to create an inviting, safe space for pedestrians, especially given anticipated increases in foot traffic. To better meet the Public Spaces Master Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan, I suggest expanding sidewalks and incorporating additional seating areas, shaded by native tree plantings, to enhance walkability and comfort for all users. This aligns with the Master Transportation Plan’s goal of a pedestrian-friendly environment.
replies
Suggestion
The current bike lane layout lacks sufficient physical separation from vehicular lanes, creating potential conflict points and reducing cyclist safety. To better align with the Crystal City Bike Network and Vision Zero Action Plan, I recommend implementing fully protected cycle paths, separated by physical barriers such as raised curbs or planted buffers. This would provide cyclists with a safer, dedicated space and encourage more residents to consider cycling as a viable, safe travel option.
replies
Question
What signage or other warning will there be for drivers to look out for cyclists at the driveway?
replies
Suggestion
An cement curb or bollards here would be ideal. Cars tend to park over the line in the bike lane. If the space is designed for bikes, please actually separate it to prevent cars from blocking the lane.
replies
This area should be Pick-Up and Drop-Off only, to meet Metro Station Entrance demand for PUDO.
