Share your feedback on the concept design to help shape the final concept design.

Use the map below to comment on the concept design for a new multimodal connection on Long Bridge Drive between Boundary Channel Drive and 12th Street S. / S. Clark Street. There are two areas of special attention, where multiple design options are available for you to review and share input on.

Suggestion
Add crosswalk here as part of extending the MUT further north.
replies
Relocate Capital Bikeshare to this intersection as the existing site is out of the way and not well-used.

Suggestion
If the Long Bridge Park Esplanade & Sidewalks are not intended for through cycling, then it might be helpful to post signs letting people know that. Right now it is not much of a problem because the Long Bridge connector is not yet built.
replies
Suggestion
Consider how rush hour traffic and GPS routing impacts the volume of traffic in the area—there will be times when it will be hard to ensure safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. Is it possible to relocate the Aquatic Center entrance to the circle, so that visitors are compelled to enter and exit with right turns? The circle should be the only way to enter northbound I-395—no left turn from Long Bridge. Look at the effectiveness of the bus stops before building them out—I only see the homeless using them as shelters, not commuters or park patrons.

Please describe how the VDOT proposed 10th Street connection between LB drive and Army-Navy would be implemented. This project is early enough in the process to at least incorporate the planning to save money and expedite the construction
replies
Why is this intersection unusual in that the bike lane is on the outside of the box? Won't this create conflicts between bikes and peds?
replies
So the plan is to abandon an newly constructed on-ramp to I395 from LB drive? Why was the on-ramp built in the first place?
replies
Please provide greater information about how a bike lane on the north side of LB drive will connect to the future bike/ped bridge over the Potomac. Where will the lanes cross LB drive? How will that work during rush hour when many motorists are using LB drive to access the Pentagon parking lots?
replies
Suggestion
Just a general comment, new/updated proper signage would appreciated especially with the trail connecting to other bike/ped paths. Also with new Long Bridge project, would be nice to let folks know the path to the future connection bridge

in reply to Sustainable Mobility for Arlington County's comment
I think raised crosswalk would be the best option here.
replies
in reply to AP's comment
I agree, turn lane is not needed. Turning cars can provide traffic calming

Suggestion
Agreed. Why is there a turn lane even here, they can access the same area thru Boundary Dr? Unnecessary conflict with cars
replies
Suggestion
This intersection should have cobblestone/different material to exhibit some type of raised crosswalk, to at least warn drivers to drive slowly
replies
in reply to AP's comment
For sure needs a raised crosswalk

Remove turning lane, add concrete island? Does this road even get enough car traffic to warrant a turn lane?

Concrete island to reduce walking distances and make it easier for drivers to know where to stop
replies
Suggestion
Sharpen the turn more, right now the crosswalk intersects on the 2 sides because the sidewalk is so far back
replies
Suggestion
Crossing distances are too long
replies
Suggestion
Sharpen turn to reduce crossing distances and slow down turns
replies
Suggestion
Add concrete at the buffered section to reduce speeds coming onto this road
replies
Suggestion
Potential for trees to reduce noise from highway on the south side?

Suggestion
Add concrete at edge of parking section to make it easier for drivers to know the direction of the road + simplify the street parking
replies
Suggestion
Raised crosswalk

Suggestion
Do we need such a long turning lane? Remove turning lane or shorten?

Potential for a raised crosswalk here?
replies
A 2-stage left turn box here would be very useful for folks coming from southbound Long Bridge Drive Trail and trying to turn left onto 12th St toward Crystal Drive.
replies
This crosswalk will be the main access from the trail to the Soccer Fields. It deserves some additional safety improvements if we're going to successfully support kids biking to soccer practice on their own, like a rapid flashing beacon or a raised crossing. Treat this crosswalk like the main crossing to a school.
replies
Split trail likely to cause confusion with little obvious benefit to safety and at the cost of increase impervious surface. Prefer sticking with a consistent traditional trail design.
replies
Suggestion
While concept 2 leaves more space for cyclists traveling in opposing directions, I am not sure if the additional safety would be worth the additional cost.
replies
Suggestion
I have witnessed numerous motorists departing Long Bridge Aquatics Center turn left out of the parking lot, towards Crystal City. This is dangerous for all modes of transit in the area, and only option 2 would hinder motorists from continuing to make this illegal turn.
replies
This looks like a terrific project, thank you!
replies
Suggestion
Please ensure there is a good way to get to and from the new path. For instance I often go to Movement which uses the garage entrance just south of 12th. I'm not clear how if I'm going by bike - especially when leaving to get on the trail - how I'd get between the garage entrance there and the new trail. So please ensure this end point is well designed (or extend it, but I know that's out of scope right now).
replies
The changes you suggest are needed as someone riding from the circle then has to awkwardly get from the trail to the bike lanes and the current bike lanes are quite narrow. Concept 2 seems safest so people aren't turning across people's path. They can go around the circle - that's how highway interchanges with circles are designed elsewhere in the world.
replies
Suggestion
Having a bus stop here (or as close to here as possible) would allow for public transit users and those with mobility issues better access to LBAFC.
replies
Of the proposed concepts, I prefer #1 the most, as it seems to achieve the goals while being more cost-effective.
replies
Love the idea of a split trail here and the whole project overall.
replies
Suggestion
Bike lanes are needed here, thanks!
replies
Suggestion
There is already a sidewalk on the other side of the road. Nothing more to build.
replies
Suggestion
Design for how people want to use this space. It makes more sense to bike here than going around the long way. Cyclist wants the most direct, efficient path.
replies
Suggestion
This is fine as is. You just built it. If it has a problem, it was a problem you created less than 5 years ago from poor planning. Don’t waste more money
replies
Suggestion
This is the most important/useful part of the project
replies
Suggestion
Any surface shared by pedestrians and scooter/cyclists should have speed bumps.
replies
Nightmare intersection for all users.
