Suggestion
There's room for bike parking under the overhang of the aquatic center, which would be better than the existing bike parking.
Suggestion
There needs to be a safe crossing around here (the soccer field parking lot) for kids to bike to the soccer fields.
Suggestion
This trail behind the aquatics center is narrow and not inviting. If this is meant to be the main route from the new bridge, it must be improved.
Suggestion
need better connection though this area. very tight paths.
Question
How will the new trail connect seamlessly to planned trail/sidewalk infrastructure further east along Clark-Bell?
in reply to paul guttridge's comment
Suggestion
Good suggestion - and the exiting drivers often don't yield to those of us on the sidewalks either! Adding warning signs to watch/stop for peds and cyclists would also be useful here (and at street and driveway entrances all along LBD!)
in reply to Hung Truong's comment
Question
Agreed - why are these trucks parked here? What are they?
Suggestion
Drivers do not routinely yield to peds crossing at the crosswalks towards the eastern end of LBD. We need STOP for peds signage and enforcement of new VA law.
in reply to Michael Imbesi's comment
Suggestion
Agreed - please plan this carefully - and give us sufficient space to avoid conflict. THANKS
large area missing sidewalk - cannot walk on this side.
Suggestion
The tangle of paths and roads by the entrance to the aquatics center is confusing for everyone and turning drivers often do not yield to peds and cyclists. Directional signage needs to be more clear, entrance might need to be rethought, as i've seen drivers going the wrong way when entering from Boundary Channel.
Suggestion
Drivers do not yield for peds. Add STOP for ped sign and enforce.
Current conditions in this area are poor and confusing for those of us trying to travel from LBD to Boundary Channel (west of I-395)
Suggestion
Ensure this primary crossing into the park is safe and designed for modes other than just pedestrians on foot. A hawk-signal at this location should be considered.
Suggestion
Consider use of median and on-street parking in order to achieve the best-in-class facility that serves all ages at this pinch point between Ball Street and 12th Street.
Suggestion
Consider opportunities to bring the underutilized green space between Long Bridge Drive and the highway into the open space network. Creating a biophilic corridor here with other potential pockets for parks use could be a great addition to the area.
Suggestion
Ensure a safe crossing of Long Bridge Drive from the west side of the street to ensure access to the Aquatic Center and the continuation of the trail to the future Long Bridge Facility.
in reply to Erin Sutherland's comment
Suggestion
Agreed. The more plant life (for shade and beauty) the better! Though be cautious that the trees have enough unpaved space around them for their roots so that we don't have them cracking up through the road
Suggestion
This crossover where the path crosses the ramp to the Mt. Vernon Parkway is going to be a serious conflict point. Once it becomes easy to get to the Pentagon on a bike via this project, there will likely be significant commuter cycle traffic across this crossing. At the very least, it would be a good idea to add a traffic light to ensure that there is a substantial period when no cars can use the ramp to give commuters time to cross, particularly in the morning. Given that this on-ramp is very rarely used, a better solution might be to simply remove it, but it may be politically infeasible to do so at this time.
Suggestion
This spot is the lowest point on Long Bridge Drive and regularly floods when it rains. Either the drainage needs to be improved significantly or else the path will need to be put up on an embankment. The embankment is probably the better option, since a tall enough embankment would allow the path to cross over the entrance to the parking lot on a bridge and avoid conflicts with cars. Additionally, since this is a bike path and not a road, geofoam can be used to reduce the need for fill and the need to compact the ground under the embankment. And elevating the path through here would significantly reduce the elevation change through this section. Because cycling uphill involves physical exertion and significantly slows down cyclists, reducing the grades through here would be a major benefit to trail users and would help make the trail good enough that people wouldn’t simply cycle on the Esplanade instead.
Suggestion
This junction here is going to need to be reworked. There will likely be significant traffic turning here to go to the Pentagon for work. This will be both from DC via the bridge and from Arlington, and if people need to stop and wait to turn, it’ll hold up traffic a lot. So the curve have to be broadened for speed for those turning but not crossing traffic, and the main pathway and the Pentagon route widened to provide a waiting space for people making left turns to do so without blocking the rest of the path.
Suggestion
This curve here is going to need to be very well faired into the approach to the bridge. People are going to be taking that curve at speed, so it’s going to need to be a smooth, broad curve with long, clear sight lines to prevent cyclists from colliding with each other or hitting something or losing control and falling.
Suggestion
The connection to the Mt Vernon trail and jefferson memorial is extremelly difficult here, while it should be right here. You basically would have to go around the Pentagon lagoon through the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove, which is a huge detour and even to get there you need to be on the road, it's super dangerous. I would suggest to build a connection to the trail (which seems to exist according to googlemap itinerary but looks like it's been blocked)
Suggestion
Test
Question
Does this work?
Question
How will the promenade be less accessible to bikers and scooters who want to use it as a shortcut when the pedestrian bridge is completed?
Question
Getting into and out of the aquatic center lot during rush hour is difficult now; how will this be addressed going forward?
Suggestion
I really don't see the need for this project as there already are bike lanes, Long Bridge Drive has very little cross track and there is the Esplanade. What is the actual harm IF bicyclists use the Esplanade? There are a lot of other places in the National Landing area where 7.8 million dollars could do much more good in improving bicycling and pedestrian travel. Fix Crystal Drive and Clark Street plus 12th, 15th, 18th and 20th streets first. Add a lot more bike parking and several more Capital Bikeshare stations instead.
in reply to Andra Schmitt's comment
Ramp @ Boundary Channel.
Suggestion
Reinforce wayfinding on the esplanade if bicyclists are not technically allowed.
Suggestion
This is an interstate offramp and is very hard to aid in lowering speeds - there is likely going to be conflict between vehicles/bikes/pedestrians here. Bike/pedestrian visibility is absolutely crucial to avoid collisions.
Suggestion
I have concerns over the large trucks that park along Long Bridge Drive, blocking the bike path and forcing those biking to get on the travel lane. Make sure any multi-use path will be grade separated to ensure that this does not happen.
in reply to Sustainable Mobility for Arlington County's comment
Suggestion
I agree. If we can put the trail on the park/aquatic side, that would be a lot better and avoid a street crossing.
in reply to Rick Strobach's comment
Suggestion
I agree that this stretch has a very industrial look. Extra landscaping is always welcome, especially increasing tree cover.
Suggestion
Truck drivers tend do use this area for parking overnight and they block the bike lane. I suppose that means they don't have a lot of rest stop options but this park is not designed as a truck rest stop, and blocking the bike lane is a safety hazard.
in reply to paul guttridge's comment
I will span the GW parkway and have a ramp down to the Mt Vernon Trail. There is a web site for the project that shows the route and conceptual drawings.
in reply to Kevin O'Brien's comment
I agree!
in reply to David Koch's comment
I agree! and it is wide enough and is way more "scenic" the current plan shoves us off on a "dead" and potentially dangerous (due to speeding cars) road corridor.
Suggestion
Add continuous and separated bike lane and slow traffic entering area from off ramps.

Suggestion
Agree
Question
Hard to understand from this map what the project is.
Suggestion
Make a parallel bike facility along the esplanade. People bike there anyway. You should accommodate them.
Question
All the power and utility boxes are simply ugly. What's worse they are very new. Is there some way to hide them?
Boeing often uses this a pudo point. Blocking traffic and certainly blocking any bike lanes.
Question
This VDOT space is really ugly. Is there any way to use or modify this space?
Suggestion
This is not the prettiest stretch, pinned in by an elevated highway and noisy/fast cars, limited tree cover, etc. A LOT of work will need to be done to make this a more appealing route than the Esplanade.
Suggestion
Given all the parking, strongly urge a parking-protected and/or grade-separated facility to reduce conflict with vehicles.
Question
I am curious how you intend to direct bicyclists away from the Esplanade when it is both more direct and more pleasant. As with 'desire line' trails, it's really hard to force traffic onto a meandering path when a direct path exists.
Suggestion
Need lit sidewalks and bike lanes crossing under the freeway here to connect to the Mt. Vernon trail by the Pentagon.
